Say the words “Ford Explorer” and everyone can immediately call to mind a body style or model they remember from the nearly 20-year span the model has been on the road in North America. Now in its fifth generation, the Ford Explorer is definitely getting better with age, and this latest iteration is proof of that.
The 2018 Ford Explorer is about more than just tackling the great outdoors and urban playgrounds, it’s about style and technology and helping you be a better driver with a multitude of available driver assist features.
Let’s start with the SUV’s overall look: Gone are the boxy Ford Explorer days and here to stay are the sleek, modern ways of Ford’s latest design language. With a commanding front nose that announces its presence with an all-new dynamic front grille, prominent Blue Oval logo and signature LED headlights, the Ford Explorer has some serious presence on the road. And while it is quite a large vehicle (with seating for up to 7 available), Ford designers managed to keep the Explorer’s lines sharp and muscular without looking oversized.
Inside, that sleep modern look continues with an interior that’s spacious, loaded with amenities and features, and also highly practical with a myriad of seat/cargo area configurations that are sure to answer any and all storage issues for various road trips and explorations.
The Explorer also features incredible driver assist functions such as automatic self-parking for parallel and perpendicular parking, as well as parking spot exit assist, cross-traffic warnings, and rear back-up warnings. The Ford Explorer is not a small vehicle, however, it’s host of safety and drive assist features will ensure you never struggle to maneuver it, no matter where you are.
Oh, and of course it also comes with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability to keep you connected, but safe, when behind the wheel.
Not only does the 2018 Ford Explorer answer in terms of looks and high-tech features, but there are also three engines to choose from. There’s a 3.5L V6 EcoBoost that produces 365 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque. This engine is found standard in the Explorer Sport and Platinum and is also paired with Ford’s 4WD with Terrain Management System. Available in the base Explorer and XLT models, but standard in the Limited model is the powerful 2.3L EcoBoost mill that delivers 280 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. And finally, there’s a 3.5L Ti-VCT (twin independent variable camshaft timing) that comes standard on base Explorer and XLT models, and that produces 290 horsepower and 255 lb-ft of torque.
With the ability to tow, go off-road, seat up to seven passengers, be comfortable, look good, and be a breeze to drive in tight urban settings; the 2018 Ford Explorer is a vehicle you do not want to miss.
